So, this will be documentation and planning for playing in the Boston (MA, USA) area within the Fallout universe as per Fallout 4. FO4 is the only canon game I've played in the FO series (I've played Fallout Shelter, but that's non-canon and set up completely differently), so that's the area I know. No, I don't know everything - my memory sucks and there's always something I haven't discovered or realized or thought about in-depth - but it's what I'm familiar with. Anyone joining me in threading for that setting, feel free to bring in ideas but know that I likely won't have a frame of reference for anything outside of FO4.

While I'm not specifically going to be taking into account the Winter of Atom TTRPG setting or story (as I don't have that book and haven't played it, though it would be fun to do so if anyone has a sharable digital version and a group), this would be set prior to the events of FO4. Events listed here may not precisely reflect the timelines of those mentioned in the game but at this point:

  • The Brotherhood of Steel has yet to establish a significant presence in the Commonwealth; there may be individuals or small, isolated groups but probably nothing bigger than Paladin Danse's team when we meet him in-game.
  • The Sole Survivor is still on ice; Shaun has become Father in the Institute but has yet to develop cancer or actively consider Vault 111; and Kellogg is active under Father's authority. Brian Virgil is quietly protesting against the continuation of the FEV program at the moment and has not yet made plans to leave the Institute.
  • The protectron is running the central outdoor eatery in Diamond City and McDonough has run ghouls out; Hancock is mayor of Goodneighbor, and Bobbi No-Nose has yet to begin her plot to rob him.
  • The Minutemen still hold the Castle and are a significant presence in the Commonwealth; they have yet to be betrayed. Preston is a minor player and much younger and less experienced than he is in the game. I forget who was in charge before the Minutemen were betrayed - it's mentioned by him and I think in the terminals somewhere in the game - but assume he's the one still in charge. Patrols are easily found all throughout the Commonwealth.
  • Certain characters are, for all intents and purposes, basically immortal. I'll update this list as I think of them but the first one that comes to mind is Swan. If just anyone with a rocket launcher or a fat man loaded up and ready to go can kill him, what's the point? Don't get me wrong: some of my play-throughs, I was not built to handle him...okay, probably most of them. But my actual heavies (not just the Railroaders NPCs called a "heavy") handled him fairly easy once I had a halfway decent loadout. For the purpose of this/these story(ies), however, the difficulty is ramped way the fuck up to make it an actual challenge. Swan isn't just a behemoth...he's the behemoth. He could possibly be taken down but it would have to be one hell of a thread...probably a group thread?
  • This is a placeholder for other listed NPCs that are considered functionally immortal until plot dictates otherwise.
  • McDonough is indeed a synth - put in place by the Railroad. He has no idea he's a synth, though, and as to the Railroad...
  • Although small, the Railroad does have a verifiable presence if you know where to look. They have not yet been forced out of the Switchboard, so the Old North Church is crawling with ghouls. Deacon is...a mystery. However, his investigations into the Institute indicated that they might want something with the old vaults, and oddly enough, the only one they haven't had a known presence at is Vault 111. He's begun watching that vault to see what happens with it, if anything.

This will be updated as I think of details or flesh out the setting. Feel free to chat with me in Discord if you want to set something up, and any ideas we come up with I might throw in here; RPs done within this setting will be linked here for reference and will affect the setting, so some of those details will be added in as they come up as well.
